Welcome!
Throughout the final quarter of this school year, you will be writing and compiling your autobiography. An autobiography is a narrative written by a person about him/herself. If is composed of personal experiences. It is NOT simply a list of statistics: when and where you were born, your favorite food, etc. Instead, it’s an opportunity for you to figure out who you really are and what you are all about.
Who are you? Certainly you are somebody’s daughter or son; you may also be someone’s brother or sister, too. You’re also a student. But if you really think about it, you can be all these things and yet none of them really says who you are. Your job is to find out who you really are.
Throughout this assignment, your goal should be to gather as much information about yourself as possible, then try to figure out how this information has helped you discover the unique person you have come to be. Included in this booklet are suggestions of items to include. Some will be required; some will be options.
I think you will agree that eighth grade is an excellent time to do a project like this. Finishing middle school is a kind of milestone…you’re finishing you formal elementary school and are moving on to secondary school. You’ll be changing a lot over the next four years – physically, intellectually, emotionally, socially, and morally. Change is a part of growing, but it’s important to remember what you used to be like. By writing and keeping your autobiography, you’ll always have a record of what you were like as a child and a young adolescent. Who knows? Reviewing your autobiography as an adult may help you understand your own kids better!
I sincerely hope you’ll put all of your efforts into this project, because if you do, I know you won’t be disappointed when you are finished. Make it special – include photographs and other memorabilia. Do your neatest and most creative work. Be proud of who you are and where you have come from!
Your audience will be anyone with whom you decide to share your project, and, of course, anyone who reads it as it is displayed at 8th grade promotion. If you really put yourself into it, you’ll be proud enough to show it to anyone.
Try your hardest on this project and make it special. I hope you enjoy creating your autobiography. Good luck; have fun!
